Save for the 2011 Rugby World Cup

January 7, 2009

smoking-siloetteIt’s 2009 and my new years resolution is to start saving for the 2011 Rugby World Cup in New Zealand which is in approximately 1,000 days.  I smoked 30 a day which  would normally cost me €12 per day. Therefore I intend to save €12,000 by the World Cup. Another friend of mine has quit since the New Year and he is also doing the same.

I think this is a real tangible way to demonstrate the financial savings of being a non smoker.

As it happened I had bad sinusitis over the Christmas Holidays however I truly feel that it could of developed into something worse if I was still smoking.

Diary of A Quitter

December 17, 2008

smoking-siloette1It is nearly 2 months since I quitted.

I haven’t been out running over the last 2 weeks as I had a bad sinus infection and I was taking antibiotics. I noticed that my recovery was quicker as a non smoker. I remember as a smoker getting an infection it took longer and if was a lot harder to shake off.

Christmas is nearly upon us and I am longer forward to having nights out and really enjoying being a non smoker.

I have had a couple of nights out already and the I must say the hang over the following morning isn’t nearly as bad.  There are so many benefits of being a non smoker such as  health, financial and no bad hang over’s!!!!

Smooking Becoming a Distant Memory

November 20, 2008

smoking-siloette2I am heading away for the weekend with my two boys and looking forward to not being under pressure to find an opportunity to have a smoke.  Smoking is becoming more of a distant memory although I still have some cravings they don’t last as long and are manageable.

As mentioned before the most immediate benefit is feeling much better when I waken up in the mornings – getting up is not as difficult as it was and I have more energy.  Didn’t get a chance to have a run this week but intend to get back into it after the weekend.

Financial gain from quitting cigarettes

November 14, 2008

money-and-cigarettesIt is nearly 4 weeks since I quitted. I used to smoke 30 a day.

In the recent budget a box of 20 increased by 50c to €8.05. Therefore I am saving €12.00 per day. I have calculated that I have saved  a total of €360 since I quit. There are 6 more weeks to Christmas which means I will have saved a total of €900 by then.

That €900 saving will more then cover the Christmas presents for my 2 young sons. In addition to feeling the health benefits  I also feel the financial ones.

More Energy

November 10, 2008

smoking-siloette1I was out for a run again last night and it is getting easier. My energy levels are a lot greater. My wife told me yesterday that she sees a big difference in me.

I am delighted with myself so far.

2 Weeks After Quitting Cigarettes

November 6, 2008

smoking-siloetteIt is now just over 2 weeks since I stopped smoking.

Already my quality of life is much better.

Starting from the time I wake up. I do not have any difficulty getting out of bed. I feel more energetic and I am finding I am not drinking as much coffee which is a bonus.  I used to associate smoking with coffee drinking .

I use my car for work. It is much nicer getting into a car that doesn’t smell of cigarettes. I am beginning to smell the leather seats  again which was something I remember  smelling when my car was new.

I am much more confident going into business meetings. I used to worry that the client might get the smell of cigarettes off me.

So far so good!

3 days after the Quit Smoking Course

October 30, 2008

Its exactly 3 days (72 hours) after the course.

There was 20 people on the course and Susan, our therapist, made everyone of us feel relaxed and comfortable. The course started at 1pm and finished at 6.30pm. The time just flew. I am a non smoker now and it feels brillant. The nicotine monster is well and truly shrunk. I am looking forward to exercising without feeling breathless.

5 days after quitting

October 30, 2008

It’s now 5 days since the course. I feel like a new man. I went for a run last night. I was surprised with the distance I ran and also the fact that I actually felt okay. I used to hate getting up in the morning as a smoker. It was such a struggle. The mornings this week just get better and better. No coughing, no headaches, no stiffness.

2 days to go

October 16, 2008

2 days to go and I am getting nervous.

I am smoking more and more thinking about it.

Diary of a quitter

October 15, 2008

My name is Mervyn. I am 36 years old, married with 2 young sons. I am a self employed mortgage broker and in the current economic climate I feel worried and under pressure to keep things going.  As a result I am smoking between 20 to 30 cigarettes a day.

I felt unwell around a month ago. My GP referred me to Beaumont Hospital for a 24 hour Blood Pressure monitor. They diagnosed me with mild Hypertension. They are reluctant to prescribe medication taking into account my  age. I know that this is a direct result of smoking and also lack of exercise.

I am determined to reduce my BP and I have set a target to do so by Christmas.  I have given up smoking before through hypnosis, however, I feel I need more help this time. I have heard about “Allen Carr’s Eayway to stop smoking” and I think that this is the help I need.

I am booked into a course on Saturday 18thOctober at 1pm. I understand that it is over 5 hours which gives me the impression that it must me very comprehensive.

I also understand that I have a money back guarantee and also have 2 back up’s available to me within a 3 month period. I obviously intend not to avail of the money back guarantee, otherwise I feel I have wasted my time. My rational is that the price of the course is less then what I would pay for cigarettes in a month.

I have mixed feelings at the moment in the run up to Saturday. I feel happy I have taken this step and I am excited about the potential outcome but I also have feelings of nervousness’ e.g How will I cope not smoking.

Anyway, that’s my thoughts at this point in time.
